The White Tiger Review- Jason Lui

The book White Tiger written by Aravind Adiga is a big satire of the whole Indian country. The form of the story is Balram who writes a letter to Wen Jia Bao explaining his life. The main character Balram has started in the darkness part of India and arrived in the brightness of India. He has changed a lot and has seen the corrupt government of India. He later kills his own employer who was corrupted and Balram at the end was a corrupted rich man like everybody in India.

This book is a very well written satire, it clearly explains how corrupted India is and Balram is a creative, smart and funny person even though he kills his own employer. He makes his own points, judgments and knows what to do at all times. At the beginning, when he and the other driver was arguing for the positions of driving Mr. Ashok to Dehli, he had found out secrets about the driver and earned his rights to be a driver. Also, he mocks India’s government and criticizes their mistakes, the police, saying the kick and kill people. Another example would be the schools where the teachers steal the student’s lunch money and much more. He also knows how to plan his things, thing like a modernize man, he had rose from the bottom to the top. He makes the reader believe how ironic the story is, that is why it is a very good satire.

The things that are satirized in the book would be the rich and the poor. That would be the darkness and the brightness. The poor rarely get education and enough food for their family. They have to work hard and serve the rich. The poor does not get normal jobs and could not go in to certain places like the mall or hotels. The poor live in this darkness which they can never get access to the light. The rich who would be the brightness has all the luxury of their life. They treat the poor like dogs; the poor could only be their servants. But in the story, the rich are all corrupted and does bad things. This explains the relationships between the rich and poor Indian life. The rich were just masters of the poor and the poor could never be on top of things.

The book was in the form of a letter writing to Wen Jia Bao was because the author wanted to Compare India with China. They both have a different system, China with communism and India with democracy but both are pretty corrupted. Like in India, China also kind of has a dark and a bright side. There is lots of poverty in China and also a lot of rich people therefore and large wealth gap like India. China and India are both growing business countries would and have a strong economy. Both of these counties have a lot of manpower to work but they are mostly poor and do not have enough equality in their country.

The book explains a lot of different points of the corrupted India through this satire. The author made the book interesting with the character Balram who kills his own employer and makes the reader see how India is. Therefore, the White Tiger is a well-written satire.
