The White Tiger Review- Jason Lui

The book White Tiger written by Aravind Adiga is a big satire of the whole Indian country. The form of the story is Balram who writes a letter to Wen Jia Bao explaining his life. The main character Balram has started in the darkness part of India and arrived in the brightness of India. He has changed a lot and has seen the corrupt government of India. He later kills his own employer who was corrupted and Balram at the end was a corrupted rich man like everybody in India.

This book is a very well written satire, it clearly explains how corrupted India is and Balram is a creative, smart and funny person even though he kills his own employer. He makes his own points, judgments and knows what to do at all times. At the beginning, when he and the other driver was arguing for the positions of driving Mr. Ashok to Dehli, he had found out secrets about the driver and earned his rights to be a driver. Also, he mocks India’s government and criticizes their mistakes, the police, saying the kick and kill people. Another example would be the schools where the teachers steal the student’s lunch money and much more. He also knows how to plan his things, thing like a modernize man, he had rose from the bottom to the top. He makes the reader believe how ironic the story is, that is why it is a very good satire.

The things that are satirized in the book would be the rich and the poor. That would be the darkness and the brightness. The poor rarely get education and enough food for their family. They have to work hard and serve the rich. The poor does not get normal jobs and could not go in to certain places like the mall or hotels. The poor live in this darkness which they can never get access to the light. The rich who would be the brightness has all the luxury of their life. They treat the poor like dogs; the poor could only be their servants. But in the story, the rich are all corrupted and does bad things. This explains the relationships between the rich and poor Indian life. The rich were just masters of the poor and the poor could never be on top of things.

The book was in the form of a letter writing to Wen Jia Bao was because the author wanted to Compare India with China. They both have a different system, China with communism and India with democracy but both are pretty corrupted. Like in India, China also kind of has a dark and a bright side. There is lots of poverty in China and also a lot of rich people therefore and large wealth gap like India. China and India are both growing business countries would and have a strong economy. Both of these counties have a lot of manpower to work but they are mostly poor and do not have enough equality in their country.

The book explains a lot of different points of the corrupted India through this satire. The author made the book interesting with the character Balram who kills his own employer and makes the reader see how India is. Therefore, the White Tiger is a well-written satire.

The Salt March

Jason Lui

1930 Salt march

I had enough from the stupid British people. They put such high tax on everything even salt, a basic food ingredient. This is ridiculous, we can’t make our own salt and we have to buy the salt they make with such heavy tax. I can’t believe in this rubbish from the British. I have a family to take care of. I have three children and a wife to take care of; I wouldn’t have enough money to survive if this goes on. I can’t believe they would actually do that. I am not going to take this anymore; I’m going to follow our brave leader, Mohandas Gandhi. This is the perfect leader that was leading us out of British rule. India shall rise again and be a strong country. March 11th, 1930, the night before the march, Gandhi told us "There can be no turning back for us hereafter. We will keep on our fight till swaraj is established in India. Those of them that are married should take leave of their wives. We are as good as parting from the Ashram and from our homes.--- Let nobody assume that after I am arrested there will be no one left to guide them. It is not I but Pandit Jawaharlal who is your guide. He has the capacity to lead." This was it, there was no return, the protesters and I led by Gandhi were ready to march for salt.

It was March 12th, 2010, we are ready to march 200 miles from Gandhi’s house to the Indian sea to collect salt. This was an illegal act because to were making salt on our own but this action is to show the British that we are capable of ourselves and they should leave our country alone. I was very excited during the march, more and more people came and joined the protest. We marched for about twenty-four hours and collected the salty seawater. We were going to start to make our salt but the British came in and arrested Gandhi by force. There were also about 50000 Indians that were arrested. Luckily for me, I had managed to run way before getting arrested and escaped from the British police.

This was a major change for India. Our nonviolence protest had made the British people to force their power on us to stop the protest. This is a driving force for more protesting activities in India. I am going to start and make more of these protests. I will help change India. Through these events, more and more people would start to question British colonization of India, this demonstrated a great act from Gandhi. More and more people would rise and start to help protest against the British. Gandhi is magnificent leader, he is brave and he helped with the change in India. I am going to free India from British colonization and be a successful leader just like Gandhi.

Aryan Empire Archaeologist

Aryan Empire archaeologist

Our discovery in the Aryan Empire was spectacular. We have discovered that they had swept into India through the Hindu Kush Mountains. They came from the region of the Caucasus Mountains and they had learned and adapt with other people. They later migrated to India and took over the Indus valley civilization. From the ruins we had found, their civilization lasted from 1500 B.C. to 1000 B.C. In their ruins, we had found a special kind of written language called Sanskrit; their oral religious traditions were all written down in that language. In their written ruins, we saw that they had lots of oral religious traditions called the Vedas. These include hymns, prayers and rituals in their ceremony. These are all important evidence about the impact of ancient India.

From their ruins, we learned that the Aryans worshipped many gods. The most important god they have was Indra, a warrior god; there are drawings of the gods on walls and they were all having some sort of position in their picture. Later, we looked around the ruins and saw an open-air altar. From our view, we think it was where the Aryan gave sacrifices to the gods for worshipping. These sacrifices are rewarded with wealth, healthy children, long life, and success in war. We also looked at the their village systems. From their village life, we could tell that they had been farmers, herder. From our research we found in the Aryan area, they had placed great value in cattle. They measured the wealth in terms of cattle. There were also different social classes written in hymn explaining the four lasses called varna. The highest classes were the Brahmans, or priest. Then it was the Kshatriyas, or warriors. The third class was vaisyas, the landowners, merchants and herders. The last class was the Sudras, servants and peasants. Then later, the system has changed to being the caste system that affected India.

Our findings in the Aryans Empire provide us with lots of things that might have impacted India. Their religion, their kind of writing. This made a huge change in India. The Aryan Empire was a really amazing civilization.
